Morales ratifies the Council's commitment to continue advancing towards the achievement of the island ring

This new stretch of road saves the enormous risks that traveling on this road has always entailed for the residents of La Aldea, Agaete and all of Gran Canaria.

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, reaffirmed the firm commitment of the island Government to obtain financing so that the island ring becomes a reality very soon. This was stated at the opening to traffic of the Faneque tunnels that, as of today, now link the municipalities of Agaete and La Aldea, and which thus respond to a demand long demanded by the residents of both towns.

At the inauguration of this infrastructure, which forms part of the second phase of the La Aldea road, the President of the Island Council was joined by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres; the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; the Regional Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez; and the mayors of La Aldea , Víctor Juan Hernández, and Agaete, Jesús González . Other members of the regional government, the Island Council, and municipal corporations were also in attendance.

And with this work, which runs between El Risco and Agaete, passage through the most dangerous area of the current highway is avoided, which implied serious risks for drivers, due to landslides. For this reason, as President Morales stressed, the commissioning of these tunnels “is extraordinary news for these two municipalities and, of course, for Gran Canaria. And it is necessary, and this is contemplated in the planning, that we give it continuity and that we achieve the objective of obtaining financing to close that island ring that guarantees mobility on the Island,” he predicted.

The island president stressed that this island ring will also make possible the communication of La Aldea, a long and historically isolated municipality that, with the opening of the Faneque tunnels, “gets closer to the whole of Gran Canaria and sees great possibilities opening up, through agriculture and new niches for generating the economy, which this highway makes more feasible.”

Likewise, he highlighted that an important milestone has been achieved by saving the danger of the Green Platform and, today, “it is being done to save the enormous risks that traveling along this road has always entailed for the men and women of La Aldea.” and from Agaete, but also from Gran Canaria,” he stressed. “Now, we have to finish the road, we have to advance on that island ring.”

Finally, he recalled that, from now on, the Cabildo assumes the maintenance of this road "and we do it with great pleasure, within the framework of powers that governs our autonomy, because we are facing a road that, without a doubt, is the most transcendence, after the two great communication routes that link the north and south of Gran Canaria with the capital,” he concluded.

For his part, Víctor Juan Hernández explained that the opening of these tunnels represents “a day of happiness” for his municipality, since it will improve the road that connects him with Agaete. The first village councilor pointed out that “this is a strategic moment for Gran Canaria and, above all, for La Aldea”, and maintained that the City Council will do everything in its power to materialize what remains to be done on this road, “without forget that we also hope that the island ring is a reality and we will continue with this permanent fight to achieve it,” he remarked.

In turn, the mayor of Agaete, Jesús González, also highlighted the relevance of this project, since it has responded to the historical demands of the inhabitants of El Risco. “We know that this is a small step and that there remains a section that is also very important,” he acknowledged, “but we are sure that both the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo and the rest of the corporations will do everything possible so that, at the As soon as possible, these neighbors can walk around and go to work with the security they deserve.”
