Up to 3,1% of Maspalomas tourists suffer from gambling addiction

It is a taboo subject because the absence of controls is total. The casinos of Gothic companies in the tourist areas would live off this lack of control. A study carried out by the University of La Laguna has found that the prevalence rate of gambling among tourists in the south of Gran Canaria is 3,1%. That number may have increased after the Covid19 pandemic.

There is growing concern about the increase in gambling among German tourists visiting Maspalomas. Various studies and reports have highlighted the prevalence of this problem, especially among young people.

The proliferation of betting houses in Maspalomas, with eye-catching promotions and advertising aimed at tourists, facilitates access to gambling. In Germany, gambling has greater social acceptance than in Spain, which may influence tourists' attitudes towards problem gambling. Tourists may be more vulnerable to problem gambling due to various factors such as disinhibition, boredom or lack of control during the trip.

The study also found that tourists who gambled were more likely to be male, young and come from countries with high levels of gambling. Tourists who gambled were also more likely to have financial problems and mental health problems.

A 2021 study by the Carlos III University of Madrid found that the prevalence rate of gambling among tourists is 2,5%.

The study also found that tourists who gambled were more likely to be male, younger and have lower levels of education. A 2020 study by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that the prevalence rate of gambling among tourists worldwide was 2,7%. Among the risk factors is having financial problems. If you are a tourist who gambles, it is important that you gamble responsibly.

If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction, there are resources available to help. In Spain, you can contact the Hope Telephone (717 003 717) or the Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers (FEJAR).
