Mogán declares war on Canarian health tourism but not on Nordic taca-taca

The Mogán City Council has declared administrative war on the Palmera Mar de Mogán complex for accommodating clients who are socio-health patients abandoned by their relatives, whoever has them, in Canary Islands hospitals and financed by the Canary Islands Health Service. These are canaries that the nationalist city council has compared to illegal immigrants. Mogán, with an offer that in winter is filled with long-stay and elderly Nordic tourism, does not want these people from Las Palmas in its municipality. The legal services of the Government of the Canary Islands, also from the Canary Coalition, have maintained the idea designed by the PSOE, in the opposition in Mogán and which maintains political silence.

The Government of the Canary Islands has a plan to attract what in Las Palmas they call silver tourism but which for hoteliers is taca-taca tourism. This action plan for the “silver plus” tourism category uses various tools that allow us to approach this client without aging the image of the destination. Thus, massive campaigns will be developed that do not focus the target on age, but on the advantages of the destination for long stays. The campaigns for “silver plus” tourism will focus on the advantages that the Canary Islands have for long stays.

With the new strategy launched, Pomotur seeks to improve the numbers of “silver plus” or long-stay tourists that they already receive in tourist areas of Mogán. In 2019, 131.600 visitors from this segment arrived to the islands, whose average stay was 49,58 nights and with 383 million euros in annual turnover. The objective is that in the medium term they visit 200.000 annually, that is, an increase of around 50%. Furthermore, with the collaboration of the private sector in the development of a product according to the segment, the aim is to lengthen their average stay and, therefore, increase their annual turnover, which would go from 383 million euros to more than double, 770 million euros. .
