Help the Las Lomas de Arguineguín food project

New Canary Islands - Mogan Tuesday, July 11, 2023

The food project is going through a complicated economic situation, after the eviction of the municipal premises in 2020, which has forced them to look for a private rental.

The food project serves more than 170 needy families in the municipality of Mogán

Last January 2023, Nueva Canarias Mogán, after an informal visit to the facilities of the “Las Lomas de Arguineguín” food project, demonstrated the need of this food distribution NGO for financial aid to guarantee the service to the families that receive their food weekly, since many of these families do not receive any other help from public administrations.

Given this situation, the nationalist formation contacted the vice presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, managed by Román Rodriguez, who informed us of an open aid line for groups and associations.

From the “Las Lomas de Arguineguín” food project, a subsidy was requested from the vice presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands to cover the basic costs of the service, which they assume with financial contributions from volunteers, to cover expenses such as perishable food, rent of the premises, transportation, and the cost of a social worker.

Following the commitment from the Vice Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands to allocate €15.400 for rental assistance this year to this project, we from Nueva Canarias Mogán were in contact to ensure that the group and the administration processed the aid correctly and on time, which was finally deposited into the group this week.

Javier Romero, current spokesperson for Nueva Canarias, feels very satisfied with the work carried out, recognizing that this help is only a relief for the food distribution project, and the more than 170 families they assist, but “this is a an example of our commitment and our political work, which has always been to work for the progress and advancement of Mogán, its neighbors, its groups and associations.”

Jenny Hymoff, president of the AAVV Las Lomas de Arguineguín, is very “grateful for the help received”, with which they will be able to take care of several months of rent for the private premises that they have had to look for, since the Mogán City Council kicked them out. of the municipal premises, but affirms that despite this great help, they need more, to be able to cover expenses until the end of the year, and anticipates that they have applied to other open lines of subsidies to seek financing for coming years.

The Las Lomas de Arguineguín food project signed an agreement with the Las Palmas Food Bank in 2008 to distribute food in the municipality of Mogán. Until 2020, this project will carry out its altruistic work of distributing food to needy families in the municipality, coming from the Las Palmas Food Bank and other suppliers.

In 2020, the pandemic led to a disproportionate increase in families in need of food, when they suddenly found their businesses and source of income closed due to Covid-19. But the Mogán government group unilaterally decided to evict the group and with it the food distribution project from the municipal premises where they carried out their work, a fact that forced them to look for a private rental, to guarantee the free food delivery service. .

In 2021 they received a subsidy from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria to cover the expenses of that annuity, rent, social worker and transportation, but in the following year of 2022, no budget amount was contributed for a nominative subsidy to said group. Made by which from Nueva Canarias Mogán, we echoed the economic problem and tried to find an open subsidy item that had the necessary purpose for this NGO.
