Amazon MGM Studios visits Maspalomas to assess locations and audiovisual productions

A delegation of seven executives from Amazon MGM Studios in the United States visited southern Gran Canaria to assess the island's potential for developing and filming audiovisual projects. During their stay, the Amazon producers toured the Gran Canaria Platós facilities, managed by the Gran Canaria Economic Promotion Society (SPEGC), accompanied by technicians from the Gran Canaria Film Commission.

The technical visit included a review of the film studio infrastructure, the applicable tax incentives in the archipelago, the capacity of the local industry, and the diversity of available natural and urban locations. The delegation's agenda included visits to specific sites on the island, notably the natural environment of the Maspalomas Dunes.

Spanish fiction released in 2025 uses destinations like Maspalomas as a desirable but meaningless tourist setting, with an abundance of images of beaches, sun and leisure, but with little presence of Canarian characters, their accents and a critical look at the social and territorial impact of tourism and foreign investment.

This is according to the 2026 Report of the Observatory of Diversity in Audiovisual Media (ODA), an analysis of the representation of diversity in Spanish fiction in film and television in 2025. The report highlights that the Canary Islands have become one of the main filming locations for national fiction, driven by the tax incentives offered by the Canary Islands Government. The ODA cites the series 'Weiss y Morales' as an example, which features wealthy German characters who own second or third homes on the islands, and a plot about a foreign company polluting the beaches. However, the series fails to truly consider the impact of tourism and foreign investment on the territory, reinforcing the idea of the archipelago as merely a backdrop.
