Alejandro Marichal: “This initiative connects the tourism sector with waste management, agriculture and the public within the same circular economy process”
Ruyman Cardoso: “We have managed nearly 100 tons of organic waste from hotel establishments and obtained 20.000 kilos of compost.”
The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council's Department of Cleaning began this Friday in El Tablero the free distribution to citizens of compost obtained through the Compost T+ Canarias Circular project, an initiative that allows the transformation of organic waste generated by hotel establishments in the municipality into a new resource intended for agricultural, landscape and, from now on, also for use by citizens.
The project was launched with the participation of four establishments: Relaxia Beverly Park, Gloria Palace San Agustín, Corallium Dunamar by Lopesan Hotels, and Gold by Marina. The hotels carry out the selective separation of raw organic waste generated on their premises, mainly peels, rinds, and vegetable scraps, which are stored under appropriate conditions until collection.
Subsequently, Ayagaures Medioambiente, as an authorized waste management company, transports this bio-waste to its composting plant in Agüimes. There, it is mixed with shredded pruning waste and undergoes a composting process using turned piles and controlled maturation until the final product is obtained.
The Councillor for Cleaning, Ruyman Cardoso, explains that since its launch, “Canarias Circular has made it possible to manage nearly 100 tons of organic waste from participating hotel establishments and obtain approximately 20.000 kilos of T+ compost, which have returned to the territory for use in agricultural holdings, gardens and green spaces and which, from now on, is also made available to the public.”
During the first months of 2026, approximately 15.000 kilos of this compost were distributed to farmers and agricultural operations, intended for crops such as pineapple, mango, avocado, lettuce, cabbage, and other products. The compost has also been used in the gardens of participating hotels.
Cardoso emphasized that “the project demonstrates in a practical way how we can transform waste into a useful resource that benefits the municipality. We want residents to understand this process and to directly benefit from the resulting compost.”
The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, stated that “today we are taking another step forward with Canarias Circular, ensuring that a resource generated from tourism sector waste reaches our residents directly. This clearly illustrates the entire project: we began by separating waste in hotels, transforming it into compost, and now that product is returning to the municipality to be reused.”
Marichal also pointed out that the initiative “connects the tourism sector, waste management, agriculture and now also the citizens within the same circular economy process.”
Following the distribution this Friday in El Tablero, which was also attended by Antonio Diaz, Manager of Ayagaures Medioambiente, the City Council will continue the free distribution over the coming weeks. On Friday, September 25th, a distribution point will be set up on Avenida de Gáldar, near the Los Dúplex housing development, and on Friday, October 2nd, another stand will be available next to the public square in Castillo del Romeral. In both cases, the hours will be from 10:00 AM to 13:30 PM.
The City Council encourages residents who want compost to visit any of these distribution points, where they can obtain a free bag, while supplies last for each day.
The goal of Canarias Circular is to move towards a model in which organic waste from hotels can be transformed into compost, returned to the countryside and contribute to local agricultural production, thus progressively closing the cycle between tourism, waste management and the primary sector.
