The Canary Coalition protects its pact with Ciuca in Mogán after Onalia Bueno's defection to the PP

Alejandro Marichal's mission: to fix the Canary Coalition (CC) in Mogán so they can garner support alongside other parties. CC is confident of maintaining the current governance agreements with the remaining structure of Citizens for Change (Ciuca) in the tourist municipality of Mogán, despite the defection of its top leader, Onalia Bueno, from the nationalist ranks to the People's Party (PP). This operation paints a picture of strategic absorption, where the island party assumes local leadership while Ciuca's long-standing local brand embarks on a process of tactical integration.

The strategic move comes after the southern councilor joined the PP's orbit. Onalia Bueno, who won the mayoral election in 2019 under the Ciuca banner—a municipalist platform originally conceived in Gran Canaria—is now channeling her political capital toward the PP's social-popular structure (in Las Palmas, the PP candidate, Hipólito Suárez, is going against the party line in Madrid and prefers pacts with the PSOE rather than with Vox). Within the CC party, it is believed that the current governing coalition will have a distinctly local profile, strengthening its territorial presence in one of the province's most sought-after tourist destinations.

While the municipalist party garnered 2.806 votes in the 2015 elections, its current strategy involves diluting its independent brand under the umbrella of the Canarian Coalition, thus ensuring the stability of the institutional pact with the councilors who remain loyal to the local Ciuca apparatus. The actual projections for Bueno within the PP are relative. He contributes 4.334 votes to the PP—votes are generally free given that there is freedom of expression in 2026—in the Mogán constituency, a demographic stronghold where the high concentration of residents linked to the hotel sector and non-EU citizens significantly impacts voter turnout.

This figure contrasts sharply with the requirements for island politics: gaining access to the Gran Canaria Island Council demands a substantially larger critical mass, where the top councilor on a competitive list typically commands around 44.000 island voters. With this move, CC seeks to solidify its position in southern Gran Canaria, ensuring municipal hegemony in Mogán and neutralizing internal tensions stemming from the mayor's departure from her former party.
