The village of San Nicolás celebrated another edition of Charco Day this Friday , solidifying its position as one of the most emblematic and eagerly awaited events within the 2026 San Nicolás de Tolentino Festival . This celebration stands out as one of the most unique on the Canary Islands ' festive calendar , attracting thousands of visitors each year. According to official estimates, more than 14.000 people came to the municipality to enjoy a day steeped in tradition, with the Charco area and La Aldea Beach as its main hub.
The festivities began with the traditional Walk to the Pool , departing from Plaza de La Alameda at 10:00 AM. The program continued with the lively Dance on the Pier , accompanied by the renowned Agaete Band, and the eagerly awaited Gathering of Folk Music Groups and Community Events in Rubén Díaz Park, featuring local groups such as Parranda Alisios and Parranda La Polvajera. These events reinforce the participatory and cultural character that defines popular festivals in Gran Canaria.
One of the highlights was the traditional "Fishing for the Rich Mullet of El Charco," which began at 17:00 PM at the mouth of the La Aldea Ravine. As is customary, Mayor Pedro Suárez launched the starting rocket that kicked off this unique competition, where participants plunged into the water to catch mullet by hand or using traditional baskets. After the fishing was over, the catch was weighed next to the La Pesa Sculpture, with a record-breaking mullet weighing 1,2 kilograms being the highlight this year, and a total of 201 mullet caught.
