Sports subsidies in Maspalomas: The new local aid plan curbs late payments

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has approved a public call for competitive grant applications to support the activities of sports clubs and individual athletes in the municipality during 2026. The total budget amounts to €396.150, specifically distributed among the different support programs managed through the municipal Sports Department. Of this total, €356.150 is reserved for local sports organizations, while the remaining €40.000 is earmarked to cover the expenses of registered athletes who compete individually.

Non-profit sports associations and clubs based in the municipality and registered in the Canary Islands Sports Entities Registry, as well as individual athletes participating in official competitions, are eligible to apply for the grants. The terms and conditions establish specific restrictions, excluding entities with outstanding repayment obligations to the local administration, clubs already participating in a municipal sports school program for minors under 18—only projects aimed at adults are eligible—and those not up-to-date with their tax obligations.

The allocation of funds will be determined by a formula that evaluates both the technical quality of the submitted project and the scale of the competitive activity. For clubs, the scoring system considers the organizational structure, the number of teams in federated competitions—with differentiated scores based on territorial or national categories—the number of registered athletes, and travel expenses related to official championships outside the Canary Islands, on the Spanish mainland, or abroad. For individual athletes, the scoring takes into account the level of the championships in which they participate, from island-level competitions to international tournaments, as well as the costs associated with travel and equipment.

Applications must be submitted using the standard forms available on the electronic portal and at the offices of the Department of Sports, within a period of twenty calendar days from the day following the official publication of the call for applications. Beneficiary entities and athletes will be required to justify the full use of the awarded funds by providing original invoices and bank transfer documents for expenses exceeding 500 euros, in addition to visibly displaying the official emblem or institutional logo of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council on their competition gear and equipment.
