The team from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Padua is participating in a remotely guided partial nephrectomy led by the prestigious surgeon Ketan K. Badani, within the framework of the main European meeting of robotic urological surgery

UROINTEC is participating in ERUS26 , the leading European conference dedicated to robotic urological surgery, which brings together more than 1.000 specialists in Padua, Italy. This year, telesurgery is a key focus of its scientific program. One of the conference's highlights will be the connection between Padua and the San Roque University Hospitals in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to perform a robot-assisted partial nephrectomy on a patient located in the Canary Islands.

The procedure will be remotely directed from Padua by renowned surgeon Ketan K. Badani of Mount Sinai in New York. In the operating room at San Roque University Hospitals will be Dr. Andrea Noya, a robotic surgeon from UROINTEC, along with the local surgical team, while Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago, director of UROINTEC and head of the Urology Department at San Roque University Hospitals, will participate remotely from Padua, moderating the procedure.

The Padua -Las Palmas connection is one of eight cases of connected surgery or telesurgery included in ERUS26, which during its three days will link the Padua Congress Palace with hospitals in different countries.

The Canary Islands, connected with international robotic surgery

Participation in ERUS26 represents a new step in the joint project developed by UROINTEC together with Hospitales Universitarios San Roque to promote high-complexity robotic surgery, training and surgical innovation from the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands team maintains an active presence at the congress through live surgeries, training, scientific moderation, and telesurgery. Among other contributions, Doctors Richard Gaston and Alberto Breda, international leaders in robotic urological surgery, are also participating in the ERUS26 scientific program.

“Participating in the leading European robotic surgery conference, with an active role in surgery, training, and telesurgery, demonstrates the level we are achieving in the Canary Islands. Our goal is to continue building a structure capable of combining clinical excellence, specialization, technology, training, and innovation,” says Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago.

This experience builds upon the telesurgery clinical program developed in 2026 between Hospitales Universitarios San Roque and the Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona , with the participation of Dr. Alberto Breda , president of ERUS, and Dr. Juárez del Dago . The project facilitated progress toward a remote robotic surgery model based not only on technological connectivity but also on coordination between highly specialized surgical teams.

“ Telesurgery is not simply about transmitting the image and movement of a robot through a connection. It's about connecting equipment, knowledge, and experience. To make it possible, we need trained professionals, protocols, coordination, and a true culture of collaboration,” explains Juárez del Dago.

Sebastián Sansó, General Director of San Roque University Hospitals : “The fact that one of our operating rooms can connect with an international conference of this importance, such as ERUS26, and participate in remotely guided surgery demonstrates the potential of combining technology and highly specialized professionals with the support of a leading hospital. San Roque University Hospitals is committed to ensuring that our patients in the Canary Islands have access to increasingly advanced medicine, connected with leading international experts.”

ERUS26 in figures

  • More than 1.000 specialists in robotic urological surgery.
  • 8 cases of telesurgery within the scientific program.
  • International connection Padua–Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
  • Participation of San Roque University Hospitals and UROINTEC from the Canary Islands-Gran Canaria.
  • Ketan K. Badani, Mount Sinai in New York, is directing the Padua-Canary Islands intervention.
  • Dr. Andrea Noya, in the operating room of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
  • Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago, from Padua and moderating the telesurgery.

The connection with Padua demonstrates that geographical distance is no longer a barrier for medical teams and hospitals in the Canary Islands to collaborate in real time with some of the leading international specialists, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the development of increasingly advanced surgical procedures.

For both organizations, this model is based on three pillars: high surgical specialization, collaboration between professionals and reference centers, and technology at the service of the patient.
