All the airlines, routes and key news for the winter season in southern Gran Canaria

The winter season has solidified Gran Canaria's position as one of Europe's most dynamic tourism and aviation hubs, driven by a significant expansion of routes and frequencies operated by leading airlines. In this context, companies like Discover Airlines stand out not only for connecting the archipelago with key German hubs such as Frankfurt am Main (from €354) and Munich (from €344), but also for their substantial expansion of their European network to the Nordic countries, with eight destinations and approximately 20 weekly flights planned for 2027, including exclusive connections to Finland such as Savonlinna and Kajaani.

Discover Airlines (formerly Germanwings) has announced the expansion of its Nordic routes, adding two new Finnish destinations starting in 2027 for flights to Gran Canaria with a stopover in Germany: Savonlinna in the summer and Kajaani in the winter. Both locations are in eastern Finland and showcase the country's diverse landscapes, from its unique lake region to the extensive nature reserves of the northeast. With these connections, travelers will have access to eight destinations in Iceland, Norway, and Finnish Lapland, with approximately 20 weekly flights operating from Frankfurt and Munich. Marco Götz, Commercial Director of Discover Airlines, notes that the steady increase in bookings to the Nordic countries is driving the launch of these routes, tailored to each season to meet the needs of customers and tour operators.

Starting in mid-June 2027, Discover Airlines will offer the only direct connection between Frankfurt and Savonlinna every Saturday night with an overnight flight, ideal for nature lovers who want to experience the summer phenomenon of the White Nights. Later, in December 2027, this seasonal service will be replaced by a weekly winter flight to Kajaani departing every Friday, offering outdoor activities, Northern Lights viewing, and floating saunas. Tickets to Savonlinna are available through Discover Airlines' official channels and German travel agencies, while flights to Kajaani will be available from December 2026.

The airline's overall Nordic network includes four weekly flights year-round between Frankfurt and Evenes, two weekly winter flights to Alta, up to two annual flights to Kittilä, and three weekly flights between Munich and Reykjavik. The schedule also covers summer routes such as Munich-Bodø, Frankfurt-Bodø, and Munich-Evenes with two weekly flights each, as well as a weekly winter service to Ivalo starting December 23, 2026, and new connections to Savonlinna and Kajaani.

Gran Canaria's island connectivity map is being strengthened across the board with the addition of new airlines and international operators. Wizz Air has reinforced access from the Polish market with a direct route from Wroclaw (Breslau) launched on December 5th. Meanwhile, the regional airline Binter has inaugurated a direct link with Seville to boost domestic connectivity during the peak winter season. The French market is regaining prominence thanks to Transavia France's route between Bordeaux and Gran Canaria, scheduled to begin on December 20th. These additions are complemented by easyJet's new routes from the end of October to Paris, Nantes, Lyon, and Milan, and airBaltic's increased operations to Slovenia and Molde in Norway.

The short- and medium-term roadmap maintains a very active schedule of new routes. Volotea plans to add a connection to Lille soon and has confirmed the strategic reopening of the Toulouse–Gran Canaria route for the winter of 2026/2027. In Scandinavia, Norwegian will expand its presence with the opening of a connection to Billund (Denmark) and the reactivation of routes to Bergen and Stavanger. Jet2 will also add London Gatwick as a new direct connection, complementing a range of flights from Gran Canaria that also includes competitive links to destinations such as Birmingham (from €397), Manchester (from €400), and London (from €435), not to mention other European options like Madeira (from €512) and Palma (from €368).
