European Capital of Culture in 2031 in Las Palmas? An official analysis this summer of the motivations of tourists choosing Gran Canaria reveals an interesting flip side that highlights the importance of Maspalomas: for a significant portion of visitors, the island lacks attractions beyond its climate and safety. Pre-trip data shows that cultural, historical, natural, and active leisure aspects are irrelevant to a large percentage of those planning their holidays in the archipelago.

While weather is the primary factor for 73,29% of tourists, and safety—a commendable second—is "very important" to 56,45%, these figures can also be interpreted as an over-reliance on these two factors alone. Tranquility (50,86%), the sea (46,72%), and accommodation options (43,24%) complete a top five that relegates any other experience to a secondary position. The fact that factors such as price (40,62%), location in Europe (39,88%), and ease of travel (39,33%) rank so high on the priority list also suggests that tourists seek comfort and predictability, rather than a transformative or transformative experience.

The most negative aspect of the survey concerns the factors that matter "not at all" to tourists before traveling. Leading this ranking is the network of hiking trails, cited as irrelevant by 45,56% of respondents. This figure is devastating for aspirations to diversify the tourism offerings towards inland areas and active tourism.

Nightlife is almost tied, with 45,52% of visitors saying it matters "not at all." This confirms that the island is not perceived as a party destination by most, which may limit its appeal to younger or urban age groups.

But what is most alarming is the irrelevance of cultural and historical assets. Historical heritage matters "nothing" to almost a third of tourists (29,7%), and the cultural offerings are also disregarded by 24,07%. These percentages indicate either a failure to value and promote the history and culture of the Canary Islands, or an inherent lack of interest on the part of the predominantly sun and beach tourist.

Other aspects that are indifferent to a considerable part are the Commercial Offer (26,88%) -surprising for a destination that also wants to attract for its shopping-, Exoticism (25,69%) -which suggests an image of a destination that is not very differentiated or 'domesticated'-, Gastronomy (13,43%), -a fundamental pillar of the tourist experience that here falls short in the planning phase-, Authenticity (10,85%) and the Possibilities of fun (10,29%).

In conclusion, the pre-trip tourism profile reveals Gran Canaria as a safe haven with good weather, but one that fails to generate interest in its heritage, natural beauty, culture, or complementary leisure activities for a large segment of its visitors. This poses a significant challenge to the sustainability and diversification of the island's tourism model.
