Music, dance and tradition were the highlights of the maritime pilgrimage, which featured 18 small boats and more than 1.200 kilos of grilled sardines.
What began back in 1995 as a small, local tribute to Arinaga's seafaring past has become one of the island's most beloved festivals in recent years. Three decades later, the 'Vará del Pescao' once again brought together thousands of people for its 30th edition, gathered around fishing boats, music, and grilled sardines, in a day that commemorates the work of the fishing families who settled in the coastal neighborhood at the beginning of the last century.
A total of 18 fishing boats paraded through the streets, and these, along with the three fixed grilling stations located along Avenida de Los Pescadores, grilled more than 1.200 kilos of sardines. New this year was the participation of the 'Vicente Hernández' boat from Punta Mujeres, in the Lanzarote municipality of Haría, crewed by a group of ten people who love maritime celebrations.
The day officially began with the arrival of the small boat at Los Pescadores Avenue. With traditional music providing the soundtrack, dozens of pilgrims gathered to accompany the vessel, while the sound of conch shells announced the arrival of fresh sardines.
The music continued throughout the afternoon, as attendees, dressed in their sailor attire, shared laughter, dancing, and toasts. Merita la Pena, Grupo Tabaiba, Parranda Viejo Cafetín, Parranda El Lejío, and Banda Isleña ensured that traditional music was always present, while at sunset, Star Music, Grupo Arena, and DJ Promaster delighted the crowd with their repertoire of lively tunes. As a grand finale, the launch of the traditional fireworks from the pier filled the night sky with light and color. The dancing, music, and merriment continued with performances by Yeray Socorro, Apolo, and DJ Antonio Boada.
