The Gran Canaria Bike Team (GCBT) continues to make its mark on its summer tour of the Iberian Peninsula. The cadet team delivered a masterful performance during the 43rd Villa de Los Arcos Trophy in Navarre, where the young yellow-clad talents challenged the country's top youth teams and came close to victory with two riders finishing in the top four.
On a demanding and fast 54,6-kilometer urban circuit—which the cyclists completed 12 times—and facing a competitive peloton of 85 top-level riders, the Gran Canaria team executed a brilliant collective strategy. In the dizzying mass sprint that decided the race after breaking up the main group, Néstor Herrera from Teror demonstrated his great speed, crossing the finish line in second place , only losing to Jakes Zubizarreta (Lurkide).
The islanders' impressive performance in Navarre didn't end there. Their teammate Pablo Álvarez also delivered a fantastic finish , taking fourth place and narrowly missing the podium. The relentless pace of the cadet team was confirmed by the presence of five of its members among the finishers: Asier Álvarez (35th), Álvaro Gómez (37th), and Óscar Daniel Darias (50th), demonstrating the excellent form they will bring to their upcoming challenges.
Solid support from the Under-23 squad and the final stretch of the calendar
The joy of the Gran Canaria expedition was further enhanced this weekend with the participation of the Under-23 team in the 35th Laudio Saria - Memorial Pablo Bilbao (Álava), a qualifying race for the prestigious Lehendakari Tournament. In a tough 111-kilometer race with four ascents of the Alto de Markuartu, Dani Lado de la Nuez (61st), from Telde and captain of the team, reaffirmed his steady progress, finishing closely followed by Alberto González (62nd) and Iker Ugartemendia (94th).
With their motivation sky-high and demonstrating that their time in the north is far from over, the Gran Canaria Bike Team will face their upcoming official competitions with great enthusiasm . The cadet team will compete in the decisive rounds of the Basque-Navarrese competition in the coming weeks, while the Under-23 squad will focus their efforts on the final events of the Lehendakari Tournament and the Euskaldun competition before returning to Gran Canaria.
