The investigation carried out by law enforcement has culminated in the arrest of a known repeat offender, accused of committing a burglary in an apartment in southern Gran Canaria. The assault, which took place in broad daylight in a residential complex within the judicial district of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, mobilized police forces after meticulous technological and security camera surveillance allowed them to reconstruct the suspect's escape through several commercial areas in the tourist zone.
What seemed like a classic summer robbery turned into a real-life movie chase thanks to a getaway in a taxi and a technological detail that ended up sinking the suspect: The victim himself located his AirPods headphones thanks to GPS on the same street where the criminal lived.
The incident occurred during daylight hours when the arrested man gained access to the property by scaling a perimeter fence and forcing open a window of one of the apartments. The apartment was temporarily occupied by a foreign national who was vacationing on the island. From inside the apartment, the perpetrator stole a laptop, a tablet, personal documents, a safe, and wireless headphones, in addition to causing significant damage to the frame of the broken entry.
The case was solved quickly thanks to a combination of video evidence and geolocation systems. Security cameras in the area captured the individual—initially identified in the investigation as "Subject 1"—leaving the scene and taking a taxi from the San Agustín Shopping Center to the vicinity of the Parque Tropical Shopping Center.
The technological trail proved decisive when the owner managed to geolocate the signal from the stolen headphones, placing them precisely on the same street where the suspect was registered as a resident. After analyzing the recordings and the subsequent identification by witnesses, the officers proceeded to arrest him and bring him before a judge, who ordered his pretrial detention due to his extensive history of property crimes.
The Civil and Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) in 2026 sentenced the detainee to four years in prison as the perpetrator responsible for a crime of robbery with force in things in an inhabited house, with the concurrence of the aggravating circumstance of multiple recidivism.
