Newsroom Monday, July 06, 2026

Alejandro Marichal: “Our goal is to leave behind four decades of unresolved cases and transform them into fully completed neighborhoods, with streets, green areas, public services, and spaces that improve the quality of life for those of us who live here.”

Davinia Ramírez: “The project will allow us to complete the pending infrastructure in an area of more than 307.000 m², improve more than 46.000 m² of green areas and recover public spaces for the enjoyment of the residents”

The Urban Planning Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has taken a key step towards the final completion of the El Hornillo 3A urban development , one of the municipality's most important urban projects. The Governing Board has given initial approval to the modification and finalization of the second phase of the Urban Development Project, a process that began almost forty years ago and will allow for the completion of the remaining infrastructure, preparing the area for future development in accordance with current planning regulations.

Completion of the urban development project in El Hornillo 3A

As explained by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Davinia Ramírez , “the project will complete the outstanding infrastructure across an area of over 307.000 square meters, improve more than 46.000 square meters of green spaces, and reclaim public areas for residents to enjoy .” This project represents an investment of over €1.163.433 and will finally complete an urban development project that has been pending for decades, providing accessible streets, updated utility networks, pedestrian areas, and green spaces adapted to current needs and designed for sustainable maintenance.

Improvements in urban infrastructure and accessibility

The planned actions include:

  • Improvements to water supply, sanitation and stormwater drainage networks.
  • Renewal of the irrigation system, public lighting, low voltage and telecommunications.
  • Comprehensive paving of streets and sidewalks.
  • Construction of walls and stairs.
  • Complete update on road signage.
  • Specific adaptation for 103 garage access points.
  • Creation of new reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility.
  • Optimization and increase in pedestrian routes to guarantee greater accessibility throughout the urban area.

These improvements consolidate El Hornillo 3A as a benchmark in urban modernization within San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Public spaces and green areas in El Hornillo 3A

One of the most important aspects of the project is the comprehensive improvement of the neighborhood's public and environmental spaces . The project will create over 46.000 square meters of green areas , distributed across six large landscaped areas, where both existing plant species and new plantings adapted to Gran Canaria's climate will be integrated. In addition, an automated irrigation system designed for the use of treated wastewater will be installed, facilitating sustainable maintenance and reducing water consumption.

Pedestrian paths, seating areas, and landscaped areas with native species will be created, thus promoting local biodiversity and providing enjoyment for residents. These actions will contribute to improving the environmental and landscape quality of the urban environment.

Recovery and protection of public space

The project also includes significant work to reclaim public spaces that have been occupied for years by fences or private gardens. These areas will now be returned to their original use, improving the continuity between green spaces and pedestrian walkways. To prevent future unauthorized occupation, the terrain will be reshaped to ensure optimal integration with the surrounding landscape.

These measures reinforce the municipal commitment to urban sustainability and universal accessibility in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Institutional support and commitment to housing in San Bartolomé de Tirajana

The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal , emphasized the importance of this progress in completing an urban development project that the municipality has been awaiting for decades. “Our goal is to put behind us years of unresolved issues and transform these areas into fully completed neighborhoods, with streets, green spaces, public services, and environments that improve the quality of life for residents,” Marichal stated.

Over the past three years, the local government has revived numerous long-stalled urban planning projects. While it's impossible to resolve all the accumulated problems in a single term, the groundwork is being laid to transform the municipality and begin seeing positive results in the short term.

One of the City Council's major commitments is to facilitate access to housing. Therefore, it is promoting a historic investment of over €40 million for the construction of public housing in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in addition to unblocking urban planning permits that will allow for the development of residential land and increase the housing supply. This strategy aims to build a municipality with more opportunities and a higher quality of life for its residents.

Technical upgrade and administrative guarantees in El Hornillo 3A

The Councillor for Urban Planning, Davinia Ramírez , emphasized that this project provides a technical update to a highly complex undertaking, incorporating the completed works into the file, precisely defining the slopes, and adapting all documentation to current regulations. This ensures that the process continues its administrative procedures with all the necessary legal guarantees.

When these works are completed, El Hornillo will boast modern public infrastructure: renovated basic services networks, accessible streets, fully landscaped green spaces, and public areas reclaimed for the enjoyment of its residents. This is the result of the intensive work carried out by the Department of Urban Planning.

A historic project for San Bartolomé de Tirajana

The El Hornillo 3A Partial Plan was initially approved in 1988 and has since gone through various administrative phases and incidents that delayed its final completion. This new initial approval by the City Council gives a decisive boost to one of the Canary Island municipality's historic urban development projects, bringing the long-awaited completion of this urbanization closer to fruition.

Thanks to this administrative advancement, it will be possible to offer a better equipped, more accessible environment with improved public spaces in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
