TUI Hotels & Resorts' global expansion in summer 2026: impact on Gran Canaria and international destinations

The German tourism group TUI Hotels & Resorts has launched an international expansion strategy coinciding with the start of summer 2026, reinforcing its presence in key markets in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. This strategic move will result in the addition of seven new hotels to its global portfolio, which now exceeds 460 operating properties worldwide.

The commitment to innovative hotel infrastructure highlights the competitiveness of international markets in the face of the chronic administrative gridlock affecting southern Gran Canaria. The suspension of the Island Planning Plan (PIO) and regulatory restrictions in San Bartolomé de Tirajana hinder new investment in Maspalomas, forcing TUI to redirect its capital towards more agile and responsive regulatory environments.

Reduction of the strategic weight of the Canary Islands in international hotel plans

Despite global growth, the Canary Islands ' specific role in the multinational group's recent projects is diminishing. Local operators warn that the lack of a stable legal framework in Gran Canaria is deterring international strategic partners, who are unable to tolerate lengthy waits for building permits. Meanwhile, Asian and Mediterranean destinations are attracting European investment with turnkey sustainable tourism projects, relegating Maspalomas to a market focused solely on minor renovations until the definitive land-use plan is resolved.

New openings and key brands: Asia as the main focus

The expansion plan combines the ultra-luxury segment with the accelerated development of the TUI Suneo economy brand . Under the executive leadership of Marco Ciomperlik and Artur Gerber, TUI has consolidated agreements in strategic markets characterized by their efficient administrative processes. Among the immediate openings are the TUI Blue Han River in Vietnam (August 2026), an urban complex on the Han River with panoramic restaurants; as well as the entry into Thailand with the Riu Palace Phuket and the regional premium debut of The Mora in Singapore.### TUI Suneo: Expansion of the Economy Brand and New International Investments

The TUI Suneo vacation brand leads the way in new contracts with eight projects authorized in the medium term. In Asia, Cambodia will see the brand's debut in 2026 with the TUI Suneo Olympia Phnom Penh , while Malaysia will add two resorts in Mont Kiara and Langkawi by 2027. China will also receive a 250-room mega-resort under the name TUI Suneo Qinzhou.

In Europe, Bulgaria will host the TUI Suneo Compass in Varna, and Turkey is in the process of opening the TUI Suneo Side . Spain has a single investment in this sector with the TUI Suneo Torre de Sevilla , an Andalusian urban project that departs from the traditional island tourism model based on sun and sand.

Commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in new hotels

The openings completed between April and June 2026 demonstrate TUI's commitment to criteria such as circular building and genuine sustainability. A prime example is the Akra Didim Resort & Spa in Turkey, which opened with 359 rooms and was integrated through the reuse of materials from the site itself (260.000 cubic meters). This resort operates with a 1,4-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant and advanced heat pump systems, and more than 4.500 trees were relocated during construction.

Strengthening TUI's presence in Spain: Costa del Sol and Seville

The German tour operator TUI Hotels & Resorts has also strengthened its position on the Iberian Peninsula through strategic investments and rapid renovations on the Costa del Sol . A highlight is the opening of the Ocean House Costa del Sol by Grupotel in Torremolinos, which offers 373 contemporary suites located directly on La Carihuela beach. In addition, in Fuengirola, the group opened the TUI Blue Yaramar in May , an adults-only hotel with 224 completely renovated rooms situated on the seafront promenade.

The administrative efficiency in granting renovation licenses in Malaga municipalities contrasts sharply with the judicial delays and bureaucratic hurdles that paralyze hotel renovation in areas such as Playa del Inglés or San Fernando, thus highlighting the regulatory differences within the Spanish tourism sector.

Geographic diversification: exotic destinations and sustainability

TUI's global strategy includes expanding into exotic destinations with high levels of environmental protection, where administrative procedures are expedited. One example is the TUI Blue Paro Taktsang in Bhutan, a luxury resort nestled next to the Tiger's Nest Monastery, distinguished by its traditional architecture and sustainable approach. In the Caribbean, the Royalton Vessence Barbados opened with 220 eco-conscious suites on the Platinum Coast.

In the eastern Mediterranean, the TUI Blue Maviss added 505 family rooms to Belek (Turkey), while in Asia, the TUI Blue Yangtze opened in Shanghai, occupying a renovated historic building with 103 rooms within the commercial district of this Chinese metropolis.

These initiatives reinforce TUI's commitment to international tourism innovation and show how local regulatory factors can decisively influence global hotel investment strategies.
