The dock has been renamed Muelle de la Esperanza (Dock of Hope) after the placement of a symbolic plaque by the Bishopric of the Canary Islands and Canary Ports.
The play "Salt Stories", within "Open Ports", and the presentation of the marquee for the Day of Carmen completed a day of memory, culture and coexistence.
The Port of Arguineguín, in Mogán, hosted a tribute on Wednesday that was a resounding success, drawing a large crowd of residents, institutional representatives, the port community, and individuals from the social and religious spheres. The event, organized by the Diocese of the Canary Islands and Puertos Canarios (Canary Islands Ports Authority), commemorated the visit of Pope Leo XIV and paid tribute to those who have lost their lives on the Atlantic route.
During the ceremony, a symbolic plaque was unveiled to commemorate this event and its message of remembrance, welcome, and dignity. From this Wednesday, the pier has been renamed Pier of Hope , a name chosen to project a lasting message of respect, solidarity, and commitment to life from the port.
José Gilberto Moreno, director of Puertos Canarios, emphasized that "the Muelle de la Esperanza (Wharf of Hope) is not just a name: it is a declaration of principles. We want this space to commemorate the visit of Pope Leo XIV, but also those who have lost their lives at sea and all the people who continue to seek a future on the Atlantic route . "
Moreno also emphasized that "the Canary Islands' ports are service infrastructures, but also places of encounter, memory, and humanity. This plaque will remain as a symbol of welcome, respect, and shared hope . "
The day included a performance of the play "Salt Stories ," which continues its tour of the Canary Islands' ports as part of the "Open Ports" project . The performance once again connected the port area with the memory of the sea, the lives that unfold there, and the need to view ports as spaces open to the public.
During the meeting, details were also provided about the planned renovations to the port's marquee in preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a space that will reinforce the presence of maritime tradition and local identity. At the end of the event, the Mogán Town Hall offered refreshments to those in attendance.
